Lactate Threshold Testing
Lactate Threshold Testing Overview:It is widely accepted that the Onset of Blood Lactate (OBLA), or Lactate Threshold, occurs at 4-mmol/L and is often correlated to 90% of maximal heart rate. At this point, lactate clearance is no longer able to keep up with lactate production. It can also be expressed as a percentage of VO2max. Less fit individuals, have anaerobic thresholds between 40-60% of VO2max while high level athletes posses anaerobic thresholds between 80-90%. If an athlete can perform at a higher percentage of VO2max before lactic acid builds up in the bloodstream, that capacity provides a great advantage. Testing for Lactate Threshold: Lactate Threshold can be measured during graded maximal exercise using the ‘finger prick’ method on the treadmill or bike. Stages are typically 1 to 3 minutes in length and are accompanied by either an increase in speed, wattage, and/or treadmill incline. Lactate measurements are taken and read using a portable hand-held device in timed increments during the graded exercise test. Individuals are asked to where a heart rate monitor for determining maximal heart rate. Cost $175 (initial test) $100 (retests) For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact Boston Performance Coaching at info@bostonperformancecoaching.com |
